ASHK is committed to providing support for students with special education needs (SEN). As an inclusive school community, we recognize the value of a diverse student body. Students who are mid-level to high functioning in terms of their SEN profile, and are able to access, with additional support, the full range of programs and courses offered at the school are candidates for admission to ASHK.
We anticipate that these students will have previously been identified through teacher and parent referrals. Typically, students will enter the school with an assessment already completed by an educational psychologist and an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will have been developed.
For students who did not present as having any particular special education need upon entry into the school but were identified later, after the admissions process was complete and the school year started, the school will initiate an assessment requirement with the parents with the expectation that this will be completed in a timely manner so that an IEP can be developed.
The ASHK learning support team will employ various strategies to address students’ needs, including in-class and pull-out instructional support. When a student is withdrawn from his/her regular class, that student will work with the learning support teacher in a dedicated classroom. The learning support teacher relies upon regular contact with the homeroom and specialty teachers to ensure that SEN students can progress optimally. Accommodations - or a change that helps a student overcome or work around the disability (i.e. allowing a student who has trouble writing to give his answers orally), are often used by the learning support specialist. Occasionally, a modification (i.e. a change in what is being taught to or expected from the student) is employed by the learning support teacher.
Students with special needs are also able to avail themselves of additional after-school remedial sessions and the tutor program offered by teachers at the school.
The school currently serves a small number of SEN students who each present with one or more of the following:
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Social Anxiety Disorder
Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia
Sensory Processing Disorder
Speech and Language Impairment
