Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) Program

Rationale

Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) are those that are complementary to the school program and scheduled outside the regular school timetable. At ASHK we intend to offer a full range of academic, arts, sports, clubs, leadership, cultural and service activities. Our goal is to provide enjoyment, promote accomplishment, encourage participation and develop social and leadership skills.

Sports & Movement

GRADES KG to 2

Physical exercises combined with Chinese Traditional Culture was specially deigned by "WUSTARS" who take great interest in the status of children's physical and mental development. We invite each student to learn martial arts philosophy which focuses on developing respect, effort, positive attitude, control, honesty, kindness, integrity, discipline, and sincerity. Our goal is to build capacity in young student athletes who love Wushu Chinese Martial Arts and train them to become the best they can be and, perhaps, even Wushu world champions!

GRADES 4 to 7

Through our Badminton ECA we will teach the proper fundamentals of the game of badminton and will provide specially designed drills and fun games. Our goal is for students to learn to love the game in a challenging and dynamic environment. We want our students to learn more about competition and sportsmanship through this ECA. Open to all students in Grade 4 - 7.

Through FUN games and activities students will develop their agility, balance and co-ordination (ABC’s) while having a great time!

GRADES 4 to 7

MLFA will ensure that all players with ambitions of representing the school are given the necessary skills to succeed in a more competitive environment.

GRADES 2 to 3

Come join Major League Football Academy for a fun filled football ECA! Whether students are new to the game or elite performers, we will ensure all players have the best environment for success. This ECA will focus on developing some of the core skill areas, including first touch, dribbling and shooting. We will also focus on player’s speed, agility and quickness (SAQs), as well as reinforce the importance of leadership and teamwork in the world’s most popular sport.

GRADES 4 to 7

Students will develop throwing, dodging and other movement skills and will learn the importance of cooperation and teamwork while playing a fast-paced and fun-filled game known as Dodgeball.

GRADES 2 to 3

If you're in grade 2 or 3 and you love basketball, want to learn the game or improve your technique, are willing to work hard, and you want to make friends and have fun in the process, then Junior Lightening Basketball is for YOU. Our goal is for students to learn the game in a fun and dynamic environment that also teaches the importance of teamwork and inspires character development. "

Kids in Motion offers your child the unique opportunity to have fun playing dynamic, exciting games. We will be moving and grooving as we learn new games.

GRADES 4 to 7

Through our "Lightning Basketball Elite" program we will build upon the proper fundamentals of the game of basketball and will provide each participant with a series of specially designed drills and fun games. We have seen tremendous growth thus far and our goal is for students to continue to learn the game in a challenging and dynamic environment that also teaches the importance of teamwork and inspires character development.

Yoga for mindfulness, patience, and stretching is available for students in grades 1-3.

Let your imagination run wild as you learn to use clay to create different types of pottery!

GRADES 1 to 2

The Art and Crafts Club lets your child express themselves through fun activity-based art projects. This club will maximize and maintain your child’s interest in art and your child will learn to develop artistic creativity even more!

GRADES KG to 1

At Arts Crafters, all projects are designed to develop creativity and original ideas in children. From improving their fine motor and technical skills to developing pride and appreciation for the arts, the artist will learn and grow, and have loads of fun in this program. All supplies will be provided.

ALL GRADES

In this ECA, students will learn a variety of traditional Chinese dances. We will start from basic moves and steps then lead to a dance performance.

GRADES 1 to 7

This class provides students with an opportunity to practise their Mandarin speaking skills through storytelling, film studies​, role play, and singing. Students will also have professional drama and Chinese speech training included. The activity will​ help students gain confidence in speaking Mandarin and move​ their language skills to a higher level. This ECA has 3 different parts:
1) Practise pinyin, helps students to pronounce each character correctly.
2) Practise how to use the right expression when reciting a poem or story telling.
3) Build confidence and communication skills through drama practise.

GRADES 2 to 7

Chinese painting club is designed to enhance creativity and foster a love of art. Students will learn the elements of Chinese painting, develop observation and technical skills in Chinese ink painting and explore various subjects in their work as well.

GRADES KG to 2

Students will learn basic drama skills, focusing on their voice, body and imagination when presenting their ideas. Stimulus will range from a variety of storybooks, rhymes, songs and themes (different countries, fairytales etc) to help students get a strong foundation of skills in a fun way. Students will present their work in an open session at the end of term to parents.

GRADES 3 to 7

Students will work on more advanced areas of drama and theatre such as improvisation, devising, characterization, script writing and many others. Students will be using texts from William Shakespeare, Ronald Dahl, Charles Dickens and many more as stimulus. A stronger emphasis will be laid on performance with students preparing a scripted performance for their open session at the end of term to parents.

GRADES 6 to 7

This Jazz Combo will recruit only Gr. 6 and 7 students who are already in the band program. It's by audition only. Please contact Mrs. Niermeier for more information. We will play a variety of blues, swing, and pop pieces and enjoy playing different styles of music.

GRADES 2 to 3

Have fun learning how to make cool paper creations like waterbombs, cranes, cubes, and hearts just to name a few.

GRADES 2 to 6

The Brownie group is for all girls in Grade 2 to 6. There are a variety of activities in the program including cooking, sports, and crafts. The program will focus on character development as the girls form friendships within the school and learn how to work with others. For more information regarding the Brownie program, please visit https://hkgga.org.hk/en/content/Brownie-Intro. For mothers’ of daughters in Grade 1 wishing to join, we are looking for two mother volunteers to help with the program. By becoming a guider, your daughter will be eligible to join the program disregarding their age. Please e-mail the leader at britneyneagle@ashk.edu.hk if you are interested. There is a 500 HKD cost required for new joining members and parents are expected to buy the Brownie uniform in order to participate in the Brownies program. There is no cost this term for returning girls.

GRADES 3 to 7

Student will choose their favourite Chinese books to read and to recite. Once the recording of the audio book is done, it will be shared with all Chinese learners at ASHK. Students who are confident in speaking Mandarin, come and join us, you will see your name and photo on library book covers soon!

GRADES 2 to 7

This ECA will mainly focus on Chinese pinyin knowledge, including reading and writing pinyin words and sentences. This is open for students who are weak or have little background in Pinyin

GRADES 3 to 4

We will introduce Cub Scouting through the Boy Scouts of America program. The Cub Scout program aims are to foster spiritual growth, good citizenship, sportsmanship and fitness, family understanding, respectful relationships, personal achievement, friendly service, fun and adventure, and for preparation for Boy Scouts. The program will be an ECA, but, to advance through the program the scout will also need things to be completed outside of school by his family. There will be fees associated with the program for membership, uniforms, and other needs.

GRADES KG to 1

In this ECA, students will play different FUN Chinese traditional games, listen to Chinese stories, sing Chinese songs and do different activities. Let's have FUN together!

GRADES 6 to 7

This final term 3 of the HKBOB ECA for this academic year is designed and dedicated to Grade 6 & 7 students to prepare for the citywide competitions in May. In this last segment much attention will be given to competition etiquette and practice rounds will be carried out with questions that have been generated from the 20 titles. Book vocabulary, plots, primary characters, and major themes will be reviewed with Quizlet Live! and Kahoot.

GRADES 1 to 2

Students will create a "Kindness Mission" project to help bring positivity to the school. The group will then work together to complete each mission whether it be creating book marks to leave in the library, or making sidewalk chalk murals to decorate the back playground.

GRADES 1 to 2

Students will build and engineer using Legos. They will work on different challenges as well as build using their imaginations. This ECA will also be an excellent opportunity to practice English as we have conversations based on our lego creations and work together to build.

We offer a fun, engaging and interactive Spanish program for those interested in learning more about the language and culture.

GRADES 5 to 7

The Stock Market Game will transport ASHK students into real world investing while learning academic concepts that relate to their entire core curriculum. Students are encouraged to work in teams practicing leadership, organisation, negotiation, and cooperation. They use real internet research and news updates, making the simulation an even better mirror of the real marketplace. While the competitive gameplay creates student excitement, the educational experience delivers the biggest impact

GRADES KG to 2

To many of our City Kids, "Cooking" is a very foreign concept. Active Kids' experienced Head Chef will narrow this gap by teaching our children about this very basic survival skill. Children will learn more about food through practical cooking, nutrition, hygiene, and etiquette. Children will experience first-hand how food transforms from ingredients to edibles served at our dinner table. You'll be impressed by all the yummies they bring home!!

GRADES 3 to 7

A fun interactive read aloud with some readers theatre to boost vocabulary, fluency and speaking skills. Join Ms. Spring for a good old fashioned story time.

GRADES 5 to 7

We are looking for a small team of creative Grade 5 - 7 students who are interested in the design and production aspects of the school’s 2017-2018 Yearbook. Student’s will be in charge of phase 2 of the process: producing content, designing pages, and working as a team to make decisions for The Torch.

GRADES KG to 2

The Chess Academy will provide the most complete chess program for your children. Chess requires a good understanding of the game, competing, learning from mistakes and challenging oneself. Through this process, children will undoubtedly acquire invaluable skill sets such as developing stronger spatial reasoning, attention span, sportsmanship and confidence. Led by The Chess Academy's experienced Head Coach, the program will certainly be fun, worthwhile and help build character in children.

GRADES 3 to 7

The Chess Academy will provide the most complete chess program for your children. Chess requires a good understanding of the game, competing, learning from mistakes and challenging oneself. Through this process, children will undoubtedly acquire invaluable skill sets such as developing stronger spatial reasoning, attention span, sportsmanship and confidence. Led by The Chess Academy's experienced Head Coach, the program will certainly be fun, worthwhile and help build character in children.

GRADES 4 to 7

In this ECA, students will learn the steps involved to solve the Rubik's Cube. Come and have fun learning to solve the world's most famous puzzle! Learning to solve the cube helps build critical thinking and STEAM skills and happens to be fun, too!

Science & Technology

GRADES 1 to 3

Students will learn to design and create a 3D game app for mobile / tablet application. Some highlights of the course include:

  • Graphic design and drawing, and Logic Oriented
  • Student-built Maze Design
  • Student-designed Texture and Artwork
  • Student-designed Avatar and Characters
  • Finished top-notched 3D Game App can be played by family and friends and will be published to the public gallery

GRADE KG

RoboCode will help students become more systematic, rational and creative thinkers by learning to build and program their own robots. Originated from Japan incorporating the S.T.E.A.M. approach, the dynamic program uses cutting edge technology for children. Students will develop skills in understanding logic, coding, building robots and designing apps

GRADES 3 to 7

Students will use iPads to learn computer programming (coding) with a robot toy. The process of controlling robots involves aspects of mathematics, foundation knowledge of Logic structure and sequence, the connection between coding and electronics, and hardware design. Students will also learn programming techniques for maze solving movements. It sounds technical but it is fun-filled when all these learnings are done with a Robot toy!

GRADES KG to 2

Science Adventures is a US-based, nationally accredited, Science program with over 35 years of experience teaching "hands-on" Science to children. Students are introduced to science concepts through interactive experiments, fun activities and take home science projects (eg. Spy Tek, Extreme Earth, Crime Busters) while discovering the joys of science.
