Chinese Program at ASHK

The Chinese program at ASHK is designed to customize learning to meet the Mandarin language development needs of all students. With the offering of different streams, the teachers are able to match the learning needs of each student with a specific learning path and then, adjust the pathway, as needed, to optimize growth. Options of either simplified or traditional characters are offered for the foundation and standard levels. Beyond language development, the program includes an exploration of culture and a connection with the content the students are learning in their other subject areas. This provides a rich, exciting, and meaningful experience for all students!

Lesson Time

There are five lessons a week for all grade levels including a day with double lessons to allow students to focus on practicing their reading and writing skills.

Different Streams for Different Learning Needs

CAL - Chinese Advanced Level (Chinese for proficient/native communicators)
CSL - Chinese Standard Level (Chinese for capable communicators)
CFL - Chinese Foundation Level (Chinese for beginning/emergent communicators)

Different Pathways for Each Grade Level

Pathways can be adjusted each year to match student needs.

Assessment for Streaming Students

We place our students in different pathways according to language ability and not nationality. The Chinese department makes the final decision on class placements.

New Students are assessed during their first two weeks of school by different Chinese teachers to determine appropriate pathways. Summative and formative assessments are included in all class activities.

Returning Students would have been assigned to a suitable pathway by their Chinese teachers the previous year. Their new Chinese teacher observes their progress in different class activities for the first two weeks. If a change of pathway is needed, it is done within the first two weeks of school.

Switching Pathways

In order to provide optimum growth, students may switch pathways during the year, subject to their meeting the expectations of the class they are switching into.

Field Trip

A field trip is arranged for each grade level throughout the school year. All field trips will be related either to the Chinese culture or the Chinese units that the students are learning.

Summer Mandarin Camp

ASHK collaborates with the Beijing Language and Cultural University for a two-week summer Mandarin camp. Students attend Chinese lessons that are taught by education staff from the university. They enjoy day trips within Beijing, and a three-day trip to Inner Mongolia, Xian, and other cities, to learn more about the Chinese culture.
